Britain's Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh waves to well-wishers after he and Britain's Queen Elizabeth II (unseen) officially opened the new Cyber Crime Security centre in London, Britain, 14 February 2017.

PRINCE Philip will step down from royal duties in the English autumn.

The BBC has broken the story after speculation the Prince had died dominated news throughout the day.

Buckingham Palace has confirmed Prince Philip will retire from his public duties.

The royal couple made the announcement about the 95-year-old's future at their official residence in London on Thursday morning, local time.

A public statement from the Palace read: "His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh has decided that he will no longer carry oout public engagements from the autumn of this year. In taking this decision, The Duke has the full support of The Queen."

The news has been welcomed by royal supporters the world over, after earlier fears that either the Prince or the Queen had died were stoked by social media speculation.

Reports that the Queen's entire royal staff to an emergency meeting at Buckingham Palace prompted royal sources to later clarify that today's announcement was not health related and was "no cause for concern".

Palace staff were notified by the Royal Household's most senior officer Lord Chamberlain and Her Majesty's Private Secretary Sir Christopher Geidt.
