Prisoners using State Library as a free legal service

PRISONERS on remand at the Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre have been using the State Library of Queensland as a free legal service and to gain access to details of child sexual abuse.

Information obtained by Fairfax Media through Right to Information legislation shows 18 instances since January 2014 in which prisoners accessed the SLQ's Ask a Librarian service.

Among the requests was one that sought details of child sexual assault.

"Client wants copies of legal cases, dated 2005+, where charges include sexual assault or abuse of infants or toddlers," the request, dated February 23 this year, read.

"Looking for information regarding the nature of the cases, remarks from the prosecution and the defence and sentencing outcome."
