Profits ripe and ready to blossom

PROFITS appear ripe and ready to pick for a Ravensbourne fruit packer who has started a national avocado marketing company.

Daryl Boardman is a co-owner of Avolution, a company which aims to supply Australian avocados to the market for 12 months of the year.

Mr Boardman, who together with wife Sally, also owns Sunnyspot Packhouse, said the business had gained positive momentum since its inception a year ago.

Fruit from avocado farms north of Toowoomba, as well as Queensland and across Australia, make up the produce which is sent to major clients including Woolworths.

The company also supplies the avocados which make up the guacamole used in the Guzman y Gomez Mexican restaurant chain.

"All of the guys I pack for are a part of it," Mr Boardman said.

"Our main role is to be a grower direct, paddock to plate type supplier."

He and Wide Bay-based co-owner Lachlan Donovan were in Sydney this week for the launch of their company at the PMA Fresh Connections Conference.

"Previously, there was a period in the year when the New Zealand marketers would come in and offer to supply avocados to the supermarket chains, because there was no unity of supply from the Australian growers.

"The Avolution was designed to give service to the chains, so they don't have to go overseas chasing fruit."
