Program off to a fiery start

SOFTBALL: Mackay could soon have many new softballers joining the ranks through the success of a new program that is being trialled in the region.

Queensland softball are hosting the BatterUp program in Mackay in the hopes of getting children interested in the sport.

"We have been under way for two weeks now,” Mackay Softball Association spokeswoman Cheryl Martin said.

"In the first week we didn't do too much, because the truck carrying our gear burnt down.

"However, in our second week things have picked up and the children are enjoying themselves.”

The cost of the program is $65 per person and players receive a glove, bag and ball.

Originally scheduled to be hosted over four weeks it will now be extended to five weeks due to the interest players are showing.

"Depending on the success of the program we will look to make it an annual fixture,” Martin said.

"The next session will take place on Wednesday next week. All sessions last over an hour so its great to teach children the skills in an in-depth manner.”

Martin said that there will for the first time be a mixed social softball tournament hosted.

"It will begin on October 25 and it will be a first for us,” she said.

"We are hoping to get many new players signed up to the tournament.

"Our aim is for a fun, competitive and obviously social environment and to attract more people.”
