Punters backing Niwot

AUSSIE battler Niwot is set to turn back the tide of international raiders and win today's Melbourne Cup if the torrent of money for the seven-year-old is any indication.

Bookmakers hold a multimillion-dollar liability on Niwot, which wasn't even in the field for the $6.2 million two-miler until it won the Lexus Stakes on Saturday.

"I don't want to sound unpatriotic, but it is a $2m loser - so we are cheering for the foreigners,'' Sportingbet boss Michael Sullivan said. "It is in to $10, and every time we trimmed the price they still want to back it."

Red Cadeaux, Mourayan, Unusual Suspect, Modun and Saptapadi were backed to win more than $1 million at the call of the card yesterday.

"They back 10, 12 horses. It goes back to the old days of the Melbourne Cup," Betstar's Alan Eskander said.
