Qantas strikes both on and off

QANTAS baggage handlers and other ground staff will strike next week, even as the union representing the airline's maintenance engineers suspends its own industrial action against the airline.

The Transport Workers Union this afternoon announced a fresh round of strikes.

The union, representing baggage handlers, ramp handlers, catering staff and aircraft cleaners announced strikes at Sydney, Canberra and Cairns airports next Wednesday.

TWU members will walk off the job at Sydney for three hours from 7am, Cairns from 7am for hone hour and at Canberra for an hour from 4.30pm, local times.

Those strikes are in addition to one-hour stoppages slated for Melbourne where 1000 workers will strike from 8am, and 700 workers at Brisbane from 7am.
