Queen touches down in Canberra

THE Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have arrived in Canberra for the start of their 16th royal visit to Australia.

The couple's British Airways 777 jet touched down at RAAF Fairbairn at 5.39pm (AEDT), ahead of the scheduled 6pm arrival.

A crowd of about 100 wellwishers was on the tarmac the airport to see their arrival.

She will be officially welcomed by Governor-General Quentin Bryce, Prime Minister Julia Gillard and ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher.

Joining the official party was Speaker of the House Harry Jenkins, High Court Chief Justice Robert French and Liberal Leader Tony Abbott.
