Queensland city pulls out of race for Tobruk wreck

THE field has narrowed ahead of next week's deadline for applications for the Tobruk wreck.

Gladstone has pulled out of the process, leaving the Fraser Coast, Adelaide and the Gold Coast as front-runners for the attraction as the deadline for applications looms on September 16.

The successful applicant is set to be announced a week later

Gladstone Mayor Matt Burnett said the council had explored the possibility of lodging a joint application with Livingstone Shire Council to have the Tobruk sunk offshore at a mutually beneficial location.

However, the councils could not match the Bundaberg and Fraser Coast councils' joint bid of $2 million to have the vessel sunk within its regional waters, so the matter was not pursued further.
