Former Queensland cop fined, spared jail

A FORMER Queensland police officer has been spared jail time after pleading guilty in a Brisbane court to accessing and sharing confidential police information.

Peter Ashley Betts, 50, had worked for the Drug Squad in Townsville and more recently at the Gold Coast Criminal Investigation Branch.

He pleaded guilty in the Brisbane Magistrates Court to accessing the Q-Prime police data system, and sharing information a number of times across a four-month period, as well as using illicit drugs at work in 2014.

He was fined $8,000 but was allowed to walk free from court.

Mr Betts resigned from the Queensland Police Service in 2014 after he was caught with steroids and ecstasy during a Crime and Corruption Commission investigation.
