Queensland Paralympians ready

SPORT Minister Steve Dickson and Minister for Disability Services Tracy Davis are getting ready to cheer on the great representation of Queensland athletes in the team.

Queensland has a healthy showing in the 161-strong Australian Paralympic Team, with 33 athletes competing across 10 individual and team sports beginning today.

Mr Dickson said he was looking forward to some great sporting moments, and the athletes' determination to succeed would be an inspiration to the entire State.

"Queensland has a reputation of success and its athletes are renowned for their fighting spirit and competitiveness," Mr Dickson said.

"The Newman Government will continue to invest in the development of sport throughout Queensland. More than 70 per cent of Queensland athletes on the Paralympic team are supported by the Queensland Academy of Sport, one of the best sporting institutes in the country.

"These impressive figures highlight the effectiveness and importance of investing in our State's elite athletes, enabling us to continue watching our sporting heroes on the world stage for years to come."

Ms Davis said the Queensland contingent of athletes included defending gold medallists, current world record holders and world champions.

"Extraordinary athleticism, spirit and sportsmanship are hallmarks of the Paralympic Games and Queensland athletes are gearing up to make their mark on the world stage," Ms Davis said.

"Queensland has 18 athletes making their Paralympic debut in London alongside champions like Rich Pendleton, Tige Simmons, Carlee Beattie and Simon Patmore.

"I wish our inspiring Paralympians every success and look forward to celebrating their achievements in the weeks ahead."

The 2012 London Paralympic Games will be contested from 29 August until 9 September.
