Queensland's first female Chief Justice sworn in

CATHERINE Holmes has been sworn in as the state's first female Chief Justice.

Following Tim Carmody's recent resignation from the top job after public controversy in the Queensland legal ranks, newly-appointed Chief Justice Holmes has officially taken over.

During a formal swearing-in ceremony at Brisbane Supreme Court this morning, Chief Justice Holmes said it was a great honour to step into the role.

In her speech she also spoke about her predecessor.

"I also want to acknowledge the grace of my predecessor Justice Carmody in stepping aside from this position in the interest of the court," she said.

Attorney General Yvette D'Ath said history was made today with Chief Justice Holmes being the first woman sworn into the top role.

She also said this occasion in 2015 was timely. A hundred years ago - in 1915 - the first female solicitor was admitted into Queensland law, Ms D'Ath said.

She hoped one day soon female appointments into top positions would not be newsworthy.

"Because as historical as this appointment is, in one way this appointment should be unremarkable," Ms D'Ath said.

"...This appointment is one that is deserving based on your character, intellect and skills and not your gender."

Ms Holmes said she would travel to regional courts as part of her role as Chief Justice.
