Question time gets rowdy

DAWSON MP George Christensen had an eventful start to his week in the nation's capital on Monday.

Mr Christensen began the day moving a motion to establish a joint select committee on the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

The NDIS is a matter close to the first-term MP's heart. He shared with the House the story of his parents, each of whom experienced health difficulties.

Mr Christensen's motion drew fierce rebuttals from a range of Labor MPs, including fellow Queenslander Shayne Neumann.

Then, during question time, the outspoken Nationals backbencher was ejected from the chamber.

He had asked a question of Prime Minister Julia Gillard about the effects of carbon pricing on a Bowen tomato grower.

At the conclusion of Ms Gillard's answer, Mr Christensen attempted to table the farmer's letter.

As he did so he read from the letter, saying "never have we seen such a dud government".

It was enough for Acting Speaker Anna Burke to throw Mr Christensen out for an hour.

He was in good company. Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, shadow treasurer Joe Hockey and manger of opposition business Christopher Pyne were each ordered to leave the chamber during a rowdy question time.

Tony Abbott ejection made him just the sixth opposition leader in Australian parliamentary history to be thrown out of the chamber.

Mr Abbott was ordered to leave the chamber when he failed to withdraw an unparliamentary remark to the satisfaction of Acting Speaker Anna Burke.

He had been goading Prime Minister Julia Gillard across the dispatch box during her answer to one of a number of carbon tax-related questions.

Asked to withdraw the remark without qualification, Mr Abbott said: "I withdraw, but it's still an untrue statement."
