Rally fever in the air

All systems go.
All systems go.

THE smell of burning rubber and sound of roaring engines will signal the start of the International Rally of Queensland this morning.

Official festivities commence at Caloundra’s industrial estate at Racecourse Road, where the many Australian and international drivers will gather to show off their cars to the public.

They will tear up the Caloundra streets in an unofficial shakedown in preparation for tonight’s Caloundra Rally Shootout, where bragging rights will be on the line.

The official rally begins tomorrow morning at Imbil, where some of the world’s top drivers from the Asia-Pacific and Australian rally championships burn through the forest.

Event director Errol Bailey said it was one of the biggest fields to grace Caloundra and the Mary Valley forest.

“This is one of the biggest fields at an Australian championship rally event in recent memory,” he said.

“With so many cars passing spectators twice each night and twice each day and no more than two minutes apart, it will be non-stop action.”

Spectators can purchase tickets at the gate for tonight’s and the weekend’s events.

Presentations will be held on Sunday afternoon.
