AUSTRALIA'S greatest rally driver has landed in hot water after a neighbourly friendship in a ritzy Cairns estate took a sour turn.

It was a pinch on the bottom of a neighbour that landed the legendary Cairns rally driver in court.

Ross Dunkerton, living in an up-market Cairns suburb, mistakenly believed his also-married neighbour had been flirting with him for months.

So during a visit to her Bluewater estate home at Trinity Park during October last year the 72-year-old decided to escalate things and "pinch" Judy Hope's bum while the pair were discussing her sick pet fish.

Yesterday the motor racing driver learnt the hard way his advances were unwanted when he was found guilty of common assault.
