Rapist cabbie sent to jail

A FORMER Brisbane taxi driver who raped a passed-out female passenger in the back seat of his cab last year has been sentenced to eight years imprisonment.

Former Yellow Cabs driver Gurpreet Singh, 24, yesterday pleaded not guilty to charges of sexual assault and rape in a trial before Judge Brian Devereaux, SC, in Brisbane District Court.

However, it took the jury about an hour to reach a guilty verdict this afternoon.

The court heard Singh's victim, now 25, left the Waterloo Hotel in Fortitude Valley, where she had been drinking with friends, to return home in the early hours of November 29, 2010.

She passed out in Singh's cab soon after she gave him her address, but awoke a short time later to find him raping her in the back seat.
