Raspberries take on a new colour

WHAT is yellow, tastes like sweet tart and is the perfect finishing touch for desserts?

Raspberries – the yellow variety.

Gowinta Farms at Beerwah unveiled its new Driscoll Estrella raspberry yesterday at a Seasons of the Sun tastings luncheon.

The event was held to brief food expert Alison Alexander on locally grown produce.

Growing trials of the yellow raspberries began four months ago.

“Our understanding is that this is the first time yellow raspberries have been grown in commercial quantities in Queensland,” marketing manager James Ashby said.

“We did a lot of taste trials at Eumundi markets where we received positive feedback.

“It has a more subtle taste than the red raspberries.”

Those who tried the yellow raspberries described the fruit as “refreshing”, “intriguing”, “furry” and “a cross between grape and pear”.

Gowinta Farms is hoping supermarkets will eventually stock the yellow raspberries.
