OPINION: Reclaim Australia debases our flag

OPINION: Last October, rapper 360 copped an absolute belting after appearing on the ABC's Q&A program and saying he had begun to associate the Australian flag with racism.

It's an appalling idea - that the standard Australian soldiers fought and died under at Gallipoli should be subverted to something so hideous.

Yet, after the Reclaim Australia anti-Muslim rallies elsewhere in the country on the weekend, I can sort-of see where he's coming from.

Any time you find yourself standing on the same side of an issue as a Nazi, you can safely assume you are on the wrong side.

And if the Nazi comparison sounds extreme, note the reports and photographs of Swastika tattoo-emblazoned neo-Nazi skinhead gangs at the rallies.

The organisers of the rallies had distanced themselves from the Nazis that back their cause.

The Australia I know and love has no place for things such as this.

We are a nation that celebrates egalitarianism and a fair go; where we glorify the underdog and are suspicious of anyone who feels they have the right to tell others how to behave or how to dress.

Reclaim Australia does none of these things.

Its philosophy is built on hate and its rallies are a perversion of Australian values. Its use of the flag debases our national symbol.
