Reigning world tour rookie of year relishes Rio again

SURFING: Keely Andrew continued her strong relationship with the Brazilian leg of the world tour by reaching the quarter finals of this year's edition.

While fellow Sunshine Coaster Julian Wilson forged his way into round four in the men's event, Andrew beat Lakey Peterson to earn a spot in the last eight of the women's event.

She toppled the American 13.43 to 10.63.

"She (Peterson) got me in Portugal last year so it's nice to get one over her," she said, before admitting she was yet to surf at her best.

But then Andrew was beaten by compatriot Sally Fitzgibbons 14.80 to 11.30 in the next round.

"What a tough heat," Fitzgibbons said.

"It's always a pleasure to compete against fellow countrywoman Keely. She had a few great waves today so I was really on my toes."

"But it (the surf) went really sleepy on the high tide. It almost got more exciting because there were no waves. You only needed minor scores. And we had that back-and-forth exchange at the start so I had a lot of fun."

Andrew's fifth placing is equal to her breakthrough effort at Rio two years ago and follows her ninth placing there last year.

Last year's tour rookie of the year is likely to move up this year's standings when calculations are done after this event, which is the fourth of 10 stops. She went into it in 11th place of 17.

Meanwhile, men's tour regular Wilson was expected to resume his quest on Sunday night after beating Portugal's Frederico Morais 16.23 to 16.13 in round three.

It's one of his best campaigns in Rio in seven attempts.

"It's been some crack round two was an achievement and to get through round three is really a nice feeling," he said.

Wilson went into the fourth of 11 stops in this year's journey in 16th place on the 34-man ratings.
