Friends and family remember mate taken too soon

HUNDREDS of friends and family packed St Saviour's Anglican Church on Friday to remember their mate who was taken too soon.

Callum Thomas Ryan, 20, died in a car crash in Stanwell earlier this month, along with two of his workmates.

Callum was remembered as a "beautiful young man" who was gentle, courteous and gracious.

He was a young man who was always going forward in life.

He savoured his first job to fund his overseas travel, helped walk dogs with the RSPCA, enjoyed playing every outdoor sport he could - including surfing in the past year - and had a passion for the Melbourne Storm.

The love of the Storm, and wanting to play alongside his idol Billy Slater, was evident in his coffin which was plastered with the colours and logo of the team.

His best mate Jared Prestwidge said from the number of people at the service it was obvious he wasn't the only one truly shaken by the tragedy of losing a mate.

"He was always there for me. My one regret is that I never told my best friend how much he meant to me," he said.

"It's taught me to never take my mates for granted."

Ray Jurd, Callum's uncle, paid tribute to a "beautiful young man".

"He took part in many sporting events, but rugby league was his passion," he said.

"I coached against him for many years…I always thought, he's a good young man."

Callum played with the Valleys Rugby League Club for more than 10 years, winning several premierships along the way.
