Report not so relevant

WHILE the Barcaldine Regional Council welcomed the flood inquiry’s interim report, Mayor Rob Chandler said few, if any, of the recommendations were applicable to his area.

Cr Chandler described the report as a “journal”, recounting what happened and when it occurred.

“We’re such a diverse and wide area that we have the advantage of prior warnings and improvised flood predictions,” he said.

But Cr Chandler said the suggestion to the State Government for locally based SES training would benefit the region.

“In Alpha, we’ve changed the planning laws which mean people building in flood plains must be above flood level,” he said.

“In Jericho, we’ve put a levee bank on the eastern side of the community with non-return valves so we hope the town stays dry next time.”

Construction on the levee is expected to be completed soon.
