A MYSTERIOUS humming and thumping noise is driving some residents in northern Toowoomba "nuts".

Multiple people have contacted The Chronicle about an incessant humming noise.

It is a low frequency noise and it seems that only some residents can hear it.

It is of such low frequency that it has not yet been recorded on any audio devices.

Some theories about the source of noise include the culvert upgrades taking place at the intersection of Chalk Dr and Ruthven St.

Others have suggested it could be the construction work on the $600 million Grand Central redevelopment, although that seems unlikely given its distance from the complainants.

A third theory goes that the noise is caused by telecommunication towers or electrical transformers.
