Retirement village residents stranded after claim rejected

AN INSURANCE company has rejected a $1.2 million claim by a Bundaberg retirement village following the devastating floods, leaving 106 of the 124 units in need of repairs and residents stranded.

Four months on from the ferocious floods that tore through the city the majority of the Liberty Villas community are still being forced to stay with family or friends.

One of those displaced from his Liberty Villas home is Noel Hustwick, 95, who is currently living with his son Bruce.

He said he just wanted to go home.

"It's very frustrating," he said.

"It's dragged on now for months."

A CGU spokesman David Grabau said the claim from Kinsmen Securities, which owns the property, was reviewed on a "contentious panel" due to the level of the claim.

"We determined that the cause of the event or damage was flood and the property did not have flood cover, so the claim was denied," he said.

"We treated this with enormous sensitivity but in the end the owner did not have flood cover."

Liberty Villas manager Darren Ey said the news came as a surprise because he was of the belief that the property was covered for flood damage.

"We thought we were covered but obviously we weren't," he said.
