Respect on both sides needed in Andrew Johns drama

EDITORIAL: THERE are plenty of different sides to take regarding the incident involving Andrew Johns this weekend.

He did the right thing by apologising to Helen Wright, but perhaps Channel Nine was also right in standing him down from yesterday's grand final coverage.

People in the public eye, whether or not you agree, are held to a higher standard than the rest of us.

That is not to say they are not going to make mistakes, but if they do, it will almost certainly make the news.

Most celebrities and sport stars would agree it is the price of their success in their chosen field.

MORE ON THIS STORY

My main issue is with the current evolution of social media.

Would Johns have been stood down if the matter was handled privately?

Did Channel Nine react over the incident or the subsequent media storm that followed?

No matter what should or should not have happened, I do believe Helen Wright did not deserve the personal attacks I read on her original post.

So whether in public, or on social media, remember to treat everyone with respect and kindness and maybe all of this could be avoided in the future.
