Restaurateur jailed for nine years over rape of girl, 15

A ROCKHAMPTON restaurateur has been jailed for nine years after pleading guilty to a string of offences, including rape and running a clandestine drug laboratory from his Italian bistro.

Father-of-three Joseph Halaby was the owner and manager of the former Di Carlos restaurant in Bolsover St.

On Wednesday Halaby, an Australian born in Jordan, pleaded guilty to six charges including rape, producing methyl amphetamines and supplying illegal drugs.

The court heard a staircase hidden behind the female toilets led to a drug lab.

Channel 7 reported that in the lab police found chemicals, drug manufacturing equipment and a quantity of drugs.

His defence counsel Doug Winning told the court Halaby used amphetamines to work long hours and prepare food in the restaurant.

The court heard Halaby tricked a girl, 15, into coming to the restaurant when it was closed because she thought she was being offered a job.

He smoked ice with her and raped her in the restaurant.

The court also heard he attempted to have sex with other teenage staff at Di Carlos.

Judge Anthony Rafter sentenced Halaby to nine years jail for the rape with a parole eligibility date in October 2014.
