STEPHANIE Rice has lost her golden crown and world record after finishing third last in the final of the women's 400 metre individual medley at the London Olympics,

Not expecting to feature in the medal count, Rice was left in the wake of China's Shiwen Ye, who powered through the field to overcome pre-race favourite, US swimmer Elizabeth Beisel.

Ye surged through the breaststroke and the freestyle legs to become only the second women in history to swim under four minutes and 30 seconds.

A spent and emotional Rice said the morning qualification had killed her hopes of a fairytale finish.

"I think it shows I'm not fit enough to back up the double ... this morning took it out of me," she said.

"That was the best I had."
