Bet on pure grunt with Ricky Ponting's drive

DASHING and quick on the field, it should come as no surprise that Ricky Ponting likes his cars of the same ilk.

Driving his Lexus sports car with a V8 under the bonnet, you can bet that keeping up with "Punter" would take some effort.

We caught up with the former Australian captain in between commentary duties with the T20 Big Bash League on Channel 10, to discuss his motoring life.

What was your first car?

I didn't get my licence until I was 25 so by that stage I had played a bit of cricket for Australia and I had enough money to buy a reasonable car. The first car I actually bought was for Rianna. It was a little black BMW Z3.

What are you driving now, and what do you love and hate about it?

I'm now driving a Lexus IS F. I love it because it is a sporty little car. It's a V8, so it has a bit of grunt. I don't hate anything about it really but I do have to have a baby seat in the back and that's not cool.

What car/s did your family have while you were growing up?

We had a green Holden Kingswood HR. That was our family car growing up but then it basically just stopped one day. Then we got an iridescent blue Toyota Cressida that Dad bought from someone at work. It think it was a 1979 model.

What is your greatest frustration on the road and why?

Traffic. Having lived in Sydney for 11 years, the traffic was pretty bad there. The other thing I get really frustrated with is watching people on their mobile phones.

Do you have any preferred driving music?

No, I'm not a big music fan. I usually have the racing channel on when I drive.

If you were to pick anyone in the world to go on a road trip, who would it be and why?

I think it would be pretty cool to go on a road trip with my dad.

Just pack up the car and go and play some golf and stay in some pubs.

We did that a lot when I was young but I moved away from home when I was 15 to play cricket, so those things haven't happened for a long time. It would be nice to relive some of those moments again.

What is your dream car?

A Lexus LFA supercar.
