RIO 2016: Aussies divers into semi-finals

DIVING: Australia's Melissa Wu said she was "finally proud" of herself after making the final of semi-finals of the women's 10 platform.

The three-time Olympian, who took silver in Beijing, said she had been looking forward to the Rio Games more than any other and was inspired by her teammates.

She said she was happy with her performance in the preliminaries after qualifying fourth but added there was more she could do.

"It could be a little bit better but I did what I needed to do," she said.

"I am super excited to compete, I have been waiting for so long since we have been here and being out here every day supporting the team has made me really excited and inspired me a lot to get out and dive.

"I think I appreciate these Olympics a lot more than the others that I have been too because I have been through a lot in the last few years and to be able to overcome that and see what I am made of is a huge achievement.

"I am finally proud of myself.

"It has taken a while but that is part of the journey as you get older you get experience and you learn to take the good things with the bad as well."

Fellow Australian Brittany O'Brien also qualified for the semis in 17th place.

She initially missed selection but was a late replacement for the injured Brittany Broben and said she struggled to stay calm.

"I didn't think that I was going to be competing at the Olympic," she said.

"It is unfortunate for Brittany but I maintained my training since the trials and I felt prepared coming into the competition..

"I was very nervous and very relieved at the end to see that I made it through, particularly after my third dive which was a bit of a shocker.

"I thought I didn't make it. I didn't find out until the last diver and I only knew when I spoke to my coach and he told me that I had made it.

"It is pretty exciting now I can go again tomorrow.

The semi-final will be held Thursday (11pm AEST), with the top 12 qualifying for the final which will take place Friday (5am AEST).
