Road gold eludes Gillow

SUNSHINE Coast's Shara Gillow has failed to feature in the medal count of the women's road race at the London Olympics.

The Australian rider finished in 39th place after Netherland's Marianne Vos out-sprinted Great Britain's Elizabeth Armitstead in slippery conditions for the gold medal.

Russia's Olga Zabelinskaya finished third after a strong ride.

Gillow featured in the peloton for most of the race, but when a breakaway featuring the Vos, Armitstead and Zabelinskaya rode away from the main bunch, the Australian was unable to follow.

Despite a wet and slippery finish line, the three lead riders were too strong and wary, leaving the rest of the field to fight it out for the minor places.
