IT'S the question that has the Darling Downs talking - who is behind a prank to tie 'get well soon' balloons to the tails of dead kangaroos?

One local prankster has lit up social media by attaching balloons to at least 20 kangaroo carcases along the Warrego Hwy between Roma and Mitchell.

Resident Jemma Carlyon was driving from Mitchell on Sunday when she and her mother saw what they thought was a human hand.

However, once they discovered the prank, she said they had a good laugh about it.

"There would have to be probably 20," she said.

"Someone must have had a bit of time on their hands - I would think some young person (with) a brilliant mind.

"It's a bit of Aussie humour - that really dry sense of humour is very Australian."

Photos from drivers have since caused a stir on Facebook and fellow motorist Louise Watson said it was "making light of a sad situation."

"It really made my day," she told
