Rockhampton and Townsville wait for FIFO decision

A DECISION on the hub for Adani's fly-in fly-out workforce is still to be made, with civic leaders continuing to push Townsville's case over rival Rockhampton.

The announcement was expected to be made by late July.

Chamber of Commerce president Troy Popham said Townsville was a strong option for Adani's FIFO workforce, given the city's livability and infrastructure. He also suggested Townsville and Rockhampton could share the role

"It makes a lot of commercial sense for Adani to split the base of where they house the FIFO people," he said.

"We strongly recommend that two thirds of those people be based here because we can absorb it.

"If they're going to put 3000 people out of Rockhampton it's just not going to work - it would be crazy.

"Townsville being the size it is and with the resources, we're going to absorb it much easier."

Herbert MP Cathy O'Toole said she had been fighting very strongly to get the FIFO hub in Townsville.

"I do believe that they are still in the decision-making process," she said. "We really need it.

"If there is going to be a split it needs to be measured against that population."

Ms O'Toole said Townsville had more capacity.

"It's really been pushed that we get either the full hub or the major proportion," she said.

"We need that injection of jobs.

"I think we've been very active in lobbying for it and I think we need to keep on going. We can't sit back until we have it."

Townsville Airport chief operating officer Kevin Gill said regular conversations were held with mining operators, including Adani, to promote the city's fly-in fly-out development

"The airport shall shortly commence expansion of its apron to accommodate more aircraft and has recently partnered with Shell to develop a new expanded fuel facility," he said.

"Townsville Airport is Australia's longest established FIFO hub and currently services a range of mining operators including Cannington Mine, Phosphate Hill and Mount Isa mines."

Adani spokesman Ron Watson said the decision on the FIFO hub was in discussion. He could not comment on when it would be made.
