Rocky a bad area for hwy crashes

A TEENAGE girl involved in a crash on the Bruce Hwy, south of Rockhampton, on Wednesday has been airlifted to a Brisbane hospital in a serious condition.

A 16-year-old Rockhampton boy also remains in a serious but stable condition after the crash at Midgee about 2.45pm.

A boy, 13, died in the crash when a four-wheel-drive veered off the road into a culvert and launched into the air before rolling.

Police yesterday had not released the name of the dead boy who was among six people in the vehicle.

A 54-year-old man was driving with his three children, aged between 11 and 14, and two family friends aged 15 and 16, in the car.

The father and the other children were not seriously hurt.

Authorities are still investigating what caused the vehicle to veer off the road.

Central Queensland regional traffic co-ordinator Inspector Lyle Mitchell said the teenager was the youngest of the 23 people to die on the region's roads this year.

Six of the deceased were teens.

Insp Mitchell said 15 people had died on the Bruce Hwy between Benaraby and Rockhampton, from 2006 to 2010.

Wednesday's tragedy has prompted Member for Flynn Ken O'Dowd to call on the state and federal governments to fix the highway.

The graph, to the right, shows the number of fatal crashes and those involving serious injuries on the highway between Brisbane and Cairns.

Rockhampton is one of the worst areas for crashes per kilometre between 2004 and 2009.

Earlier this week Premier Anna Bligh unveiled upgrades for the highway, including 75km of dual carriageway between Rockhampton and Mt Larcom, though this could take up to 20 years before work starts.
