Rodeo arena to fire

BIG bulls and fast times, that’s what Emerald Rodeo co-ordinator Shane Kenny is promising for this year’s premier regional rodeo.

On show will be the 2008, 2009 and 2010 bucking bulls of the year.

One rogue beast taking to the arena is going by the name of “Hard Yards” and is one you definitely don’t want to mess with.

“He’s crossed between a cow and just about everything else but you only have to take one look at him to know you wouldn’t want him anywhere near your cows,” Shane said.

A newly revamped Emerald arena also heralds the prospect of some quick times.

“The ring is set up really good to be fast – I wouldn’t be surprised if we set a few records here on the weekend,” he said.

On the cards are 38 nominations in the open bull ride, about 34 in the ladies breakaway and barrel racing events and 44 entries in the team-roping. Shane said all stops will need to be pulled out in his pet team-roping discipline, to contain the likes of class-ropers Aaron Bookluck and Terry Evison.

“They’re two kids who have been riding really well – they’re top dogs in the game,” he said.

A number of lucky junior competitors will also get the chance to mix it with their rodeo peers and showcase their skills during the main event starting at 6pm.

Rodeo sponsors better be on their toes too Shane said, as the veteran cowboy still had a few tricks up his sleeve yet.

“The challenge will be there – it’s going to be interesting,” he said.
