Romelda Aiken back and raring to go

NETBALL: Firebirds shooter Romelda Aiken can't wait to renew her rivalry with England's Geva Mentor when they go head-to-head in Sunday's Queensland derby against the Sunshine Coast Lightning.

Jamaican international Aiken (pictured) missed her first ever game for the Firebirds when a knee injury kept her out of the win over the Thunderbirds on the weekend.

Aiken will return to action and will be hoping to lead the Firebirds to a much-needed victory over the Lightning after the two sides played out a thrilling 56-56 draw in the opening round of the Super Netball competition.

The shooter said she could not wait to get back on court and was inspired to do well.

"Missing the Thunderbirds game last week gave me the opportunity to regroup and get back to what I do best," Aiken said.

"Coming up against Geva Mentor is going to push me to see where I am as a player. I need to get her outside her comfort zone.

"Of course when you have another team in your home state, you want to do well.

"They're sitting second on the ladder but we've got a few more games to play - the tables can turn at any stage.

"We just need to look after ourselves, do our jobs out on court and the rest will come."

Firebirds centre Erin Burger, a replacement player for Mahalia Cassidy, will miss the game due to personal commitments in South Africa and will return for next weekend's home clash with the Giants on the Gold Coast.

Vice-captain Caitlyn Nevins said Jemma Mi Mi had proved a capable replacement for the 94-cap South African international.
