RODEO: It was double the glory for Leanne Caban at the weekend in front of her home crowd at the Emerald Rodeo.

Caban has been at the top of the breakaway roping standings for most of the season but she also shone in the barrel race at her hometown rodeo to win the breakaway roping and barrel racing double in open events.

Caban finished ahead of New South Wales rider Jo Caldwell in the barrel race and was .35 of a second ahead of runner-up Tenielle Middleton, of Hughenden, in breakaway roping.

"Winning a double hasn't happened in some time for me,” she said.

"I am leading in the breakaway roping titles for the season.

"That's been my strongest event for the last few years.”

Caban's win in the breakaway roping came with plenty of praise for her horse Gattling, who turns 26 in November.

"At 26 years old for him to be at that level, he's very confident,” she said.

"He's very old to be competing like that but I won the big Mt Isa rodeo on him last year.”

Caban also had success on her horse Akkadakka, in the barrel racing event.

"He won a big pro rodeo a few weeks before and he is just hitting his straps which is good timing because we have some big rodeos coming up,” she said.

"To have him starting to peak at this time is perfect.

"Once trained, they become more seasoned.

"It's more than likely that once they are trained and know the job, they don't have ups and downs.

"So I am hoping I've done enough with him to keep performing at a high level.”

The Emerald Rodeo kick started the Northern Run rodeos with the Taroom Rodeo next weekend and several more before finishing with the Mt Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo on August 11-13.

"Every rodeo is the same, you want to do your best to come out with the best possible outcome, either a win or a placing,” she said.

"But a win in Emerald is sweeter because there's a lot more friends and family watching.”

And though the next month will mean a lot of travel, Caban said it was something she was used to.

"Once you are leading it drives you on, you want to get into the finals and be in the best position,” she said.

"Though, with a young family, I can't make it my sole focus as I can't drop everything to go to rodeos.

"We try to do the ones closer to home.”

The advantage to that was the prizemoney which converted to points in the sport.

With her husband Dale competing in the team events and their two kids Clay and Maddison also involved, the sport is loved by all the family.

"We practise here at home together; it's a great family sport,” Caban said.
