Warwick Abbey top spot to say 'I do'
WARWICK residents have always known it is a gem, but the Abbey of the Roses is now officially the best place in Queensland to say “I do”.
As the Royal Wedding countdown heats up, Tourism Queensland yesterday released its Top 10 places in Queensland to tie the knot.
In claiming top honour, the Abbey of the Roses beat an underwater wedding on the Great Barrier Reef, a ceremony at the base of Undara Volcanic National Park and tying the knot on a floating chapel at the Gold Coast.
Owners Sonia Hunt and Mark Cains, who bought the Abbey 12 months ago, said they were thrilled to hear the news.
The pair themselves are engaged, and have set aside a weekend in November for their own wedding at the Abbey.
“It’s really exciting. It makes all the effort really worthwhile,” Ms Hunt said.
“We’ve really enjoyed every wedding we’ve had in our 12 months here – and we haven’t had a bridezilla yet.”
The pair have hosted 15 weddings since they bought the Abbey of the Roses, and say they enjoy being involved in the special day.
Many of the couples are from Brisbane and the Gold Coast, but there have recently been bookings from Mt Isa and Western Australia.
Ms Hunt said the lure of the Abbey of the Roses for soon-to-be brides was the grandeur of the building.
“It has that fairytale uniqueness about it.
"A lot of people who want a wedding in a castle come here,” she said.
“Also, the option for people to be able to stay here is appealing to a lot of people too.
"It’s much easier than having to leave the reception place to spend the night.”
In the meantime they have a number of projects they are turning their attention to, including finishing a new sandstone fence.
“That should be done by the end of next week,” Ms Hunt said.
“We had to wait six months for the sandstone to arrive, but it’s nearly there.”
After that Ms Hunt and Mr Cains plan to build sandstone paving outside the function room, to allow an outside space, and then will set to work in the gardens with some bright ideas.
