Rural electorate redistribution to be debated tonight

PARLIAMENT is set to debate an LNP proposal to allow the Electoral Commission to create up to five new seats in western and northern Queensland on Wednesday night

LNP shadow attorney-general Ian Walker introduced the bill to parliament to reduce the size of massive western seats including Mt Isa and Warrego.

While Labor said they would vote against the bill, Katter's Australian Party MPs Robbie Katter and Shane Knuth - whose seats could be changed under the redistribution - vowed to support it, meaning the bill's fate rested with independents Billy Gordon and Peter Wellington.

Labor Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath said the changes were a call back to the Bjelke-Petersen era.

"The LNP also want to increase the weighting for large electoral districts from 2% to 4%, moving away from one vote, one value, saying that a voter in Mansfield or Surfers Paradise or in Brisbane Central does not have the same value in relation to their vote as a voter in a regional electorate," she said.

"These are the bad old days of Joh. This is what the Fitzgerald Inquiry recommended to do away with once and for all.

"It certainly appears that the LNP would like to see the extra politicians and the gerrymander back in place by the time the next election rolls around."

But Mr Walker said with electorates like Mt Isa the size of France it was time to revisit redistribution.
