THE number of Australians in the NBA could continue to swell.

Ryan Broekhoff, the Melbourne-native currently playing in Russia's VTB United League, has been playing at a high enough level that multiple NBA officials are travelling to the region to take a closer look at him.

The news was reported by pro basketball reporter, David Pick, though no teams were specified.

Broekhoff currently plays for Lokomotiv Kuban, and is averaging 12.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, while shooting an impressive 54.9 percent from the field and 50.6 percent from beyond the arc.

The sharpshooter was recently crowned the winner of the VTB League's three-point shootout; an effort that likely acted as a catalyst for NBA teams to make the trip to Russia during the All-Star break.

One NBA scout, who spoke with on the condition of anonymity to discuss the topic candidly, said Broekhoff's three-point shooting is what translates best, however, one question the scout raised was, "what position does he defend?"

Questions about Broekhoff's athleticism have concerned NBA scouts over the years, and that shortcoming is still one that lingers.

Broekhoff's single stint involving the NBA was playing five games for the Denver Nuggets during the 2015-16 Las Vegas Summer League. The 6'7 wing averaged 4.4 points and 1.6 rebounds per game, shooting 40 percent from downtown. The Nuggets are not among the teams travelling to Russia to see Broekhoff, sources told

After spending four years at Valparaiso, Broekhoff went undrafted in the 2013 NBA Draft, before signing with Besiktas to begin his professional career.

Broekhoff has been a consistent member of the Australian Boomers team, most recently representing his country at to the 2016 Rio Olympics.
