Sailors and kayakers going for glory

AUSTRALIA is hoping to make more of a splash on the medals table with great chances of gold in both the sailing and kayaking tonight.

The men's 470 team of Matthew Belcher and Malcolm Page go into the medal race (10pm AEST) with a four-point lead over British rivals Luke Patience and Stuart Bithell.

While the Aussies are guaranteed at least a silver medal, Page said he and Belcher weren't going to worry about what the Brits were up to, rather they would draw inspiration from the gold medal-winning effort of laser class sailor Tom Slingsby.

"We're just going to worry about ourselves," Page said. "We're hoping the good results from our teammates will spur us on."

Meanwhile the crew of Tate Smith, David Smith, Murray Stewart and Jacob Clear will start favourites in the men's K4 1000m final after recording the fastest qualifying time of the semi-finals.

The Aussies, silver medallists from the 2011 world championships, faced a late surge from world champions Germany in the semi but were able to hold their lead in the push to the finish line.
