THEY had to wait for one more race but the Australian sailing duo of Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen have finally picked up their men's 49er gold medals.
The pair secured top spot of the podium with a race to spare, but still needed to compete in the final race of the regatta.
But with the gold medal secured, the Australian pair were happy enough to let the battle for the minor places be fought, especially with the bronze medallion still very much up for grabs.
However, in the final standings, silver went to the New Zealand crew of Peter Burling and Blair Tuke and bronze was eventually snared by the quick finishing Danish duo of Allan Norregaard and Peter Lang.
Sailing under no pressure, Outteridge and Jensen finished fourth in the final race, behind Austria, New Zealand and Denmark.
But the final race was more of a lap honour than a race for points for the Australians.
"Today was about enjoying the race," Outteridge said.
"It was amazing, we've sailed brilliantly for four years."
"It's very exciting ... and its starting to sink in," Jensen added.
