Sally Fitzgibbons suffers serious injury
SALLY Fitzgibbons has sustained a potentially event-ending foot injury at the Bells Beach surf site in Victoria after a nasty accident in the dying minutes of her round four heat of the Rip Curl Pro.
The Australian surfer was in visible pain after tearing the top of her foot open in the heat and was rushed to shore for treatment.
It is not known whether the current world No. 1 will be able to continue competing in the world tour event.
Fitzgibbons fell awkwardly and cut her foot on her fin on her last wave.
"Sally Fitzgibbons is in a fair bit of pain," said WSL Deputy Commissioner Jessi Miley-Dyer. "I think she has a pretty big gash at the top of her foot.
"I do not know the much about how deep or anything but there is a fair amount of blood. The medics are taking care of her now."
Fitzgibbons, the fiance of NRL star Trent Merton, won the last leg of the world tour in Western Australia.
Prior to this her last victory was in 2015 in Fiji where she surfed with a broken eardrum.
Fitzgibbons' mother Mary was with her as she received treatment for the injury.
