San Antonio Spurs have landed down under - carrying a friend

"We're in Australia, mate".

That was NBA championship-winning point guard Patty Mills's simple explanation given to the nickname - "Lazza" - that he and fellow Australian title winner, Aron Baines, branded the Larry O'Brien trophy - the most sought-after prize in world basketball.

The San Antonio Spurs stars arrived in Brisbane today on their Whirlwind fan tour of Australia, with their bright gold little mate "Lazza" in tow.

Baines gave a bit more of a detailed explanation.

"We were just having a chat on the bus on the way to another interview. It's not Australian if we just call it the Larry O'Brien trophy," he said.

"So Alana our PR person threw out 'Lazza' and everyone jumped on board pretty quickly."

Mills said the future of the Spurs looked bright in light of their amazing finals series triumph over the star-studded Miami Heat last month

"Having this team come back again next year, hopefully we can have another crack at it," he said.
