Sausage king snags Recipe to Riches grand final win
QUEENSLAND'S "king" of sausages Michael Cainero was crowned Recipe to Riches' grand final winner tonight.
His pork, apple and cinnamon sausages out-sold six other final products including the most recent offering of a decadent toffee date cake.
Thanks to the nationwide popularity of his snags, Cainero pocketed $100,000 and an on-going partnership with food retailer Woolworths.
The 32-year-old father from North Lakes is now set for a career change thanks to his victory.
"It is a real dream come true to know my product is going to be in Woolworths stores hopefully for a very long time," Cainero told APN.
"I'm passionate about food and I've wanted a career change for many years. To have my foot in the door, well, I'm not going to sit back."
The concreter and pipe layer will down his tools in the hopes of expanding his allergy-friendly range of snags and salamis.
His pork sausages are just one of many dishes he makes from scratch because of his family's food allergies.
His four-year-old daughter Isabelle developed her allergies when she was diagnosed with leukemia nearly three years ago. While she is now happy and healthy after battling the cancer, little Izzy must stick to a strict diet.
"We try to make everything at home so she can be a part of it," he said.
"Unfortunately allergies and intolerances are becoming more and more common.
"We've gone back to a more traditional way of eating… instead of artificial flavours and colours it's about putting in the real flavours, like garlic, rather than the man-made products."
The third-generation sausage maker hopes to one day stock an entire range of gluten-free snags on supermarket shelves.
"We make our own sausages with all the meats: chicken, pork, lamb and beef," he said.
"I'm going to let Woolworths try them all. I'd love to get those healthy products out there."
Michael's King of Sausages, Chunky Pork & Apple sausages will be on sale in Woolworths stores nationally from January 5, 2015.
