Tradie says bye to beers to Bussta Gut

IPSWICH construction worker Terry Hamilton admits it will be out with the beers and in with the apples for the next eight months.

Mr Hamilton is happy to make the sacrifices for the sake of his own health and to set a good example for his son.

The Builders Labourers Federation (BLF) is taking action with The Bussta Gut Challenge after a 2009 health check of 1000 workers revealed that 66 per cent were overweight or obese and 64 per cent were consuming alcohol at a dangerous level.

Last year a Queensland Health statewide survey of almost 7000 people, including 600 in the Ipswich area, found that 62.4% of people in Ipswich admitted to being overweight or obese.

Mr Hamilton does not regard himself as being in that category but he has registered for the eight-month challenge that will involve free gym membership and dietary advice from qualified dietitians for 100 workers.

The program is also being assisted with health seminars from the Queensland Cancer Council and prostate cancer survivors.

“I want to eat healthy so that my 13-year-old son Zachary can do that as well and get more out of life,” he said.

“For eight months we get weighed in at the end of each month and do a bit of gym work. We get a healthy four-week eating plan on rotation and the idea is to teach you how to eat properly.”

Mr Hamilton likes the odd beer after work but the dietary requirements limit him to six mid-strengths a week.

He said the nature of construction work could lead employees to pig out at the end of the day rather than eat a selection of healthy meals.

“With the 12 hours we do, you only get two breaks to eat and when we get home the last meal of the day is usually a big one.

“Some blokes might substitute having a nice meal for a few more beers.

“I always like to work hard and have a few beers myself – which is my biggest downfall. I'd like to lose six to eight kilos if I can.”
