The decision to flee from police after returning a positive roadside breath test has left this 21-year-old Caboolture man with a rather large fine.

Linchon Te Ra Whetu Puohotaua pleaded guilty to one count of drink driving, a charge of obstructing police and failing to comply with a licence condition in Caboolture Magistrates Court today.

The court heard police intercepted Puohotaua's vehicle at Caboolture on June 28.

After returning a positive breath test and telling police he had drunk seven beers before getting behind the wheel the 21-year-old sprinted from police.

The court heard he was located by police a short time later 400m away on a sports field.

He was detained and taken to the police station for further testing.

The court heard he recorded a breath alcohol concentration of 0.12 per cent.

Puohotaua also only had an automatic licence, but was found driving a manual car.

The duty lawyer said Puohotaua ran from police in panic as he was "scared" and wasn't sure what would happen.

Magistrate Andrew Hackett said Puohotaua only had one relevant prior conviction, an obstruct police in July 2017.

"You have no priors for drink or drug driving, which we see a lot of in Caboolture Magistrates Court," Magistrate Hackett said.

Puohotaua was fined $250 in relation to the obstruct police charge, $800 for drink driving and $150 for not complying with a licence condition.

He was disqualified from driving for four months.

No conviction was recorded.
