MELANIE Schlanger has qualified second-fastest for the women's 100m freestyle semi-finals.

Schlanger (53.50 seconds) eased through her heat to finish 0.13 ahead of Belarus's Aliaksandra Herasimenia.

"I felt pretty good. I wanted to sneak under 54, which I did," Schlanger said.

"I guess my second 50m is always my strength."

Schlanger said she was saddened to see fellow Australian Cate Campbell withdraw from her heat due to illness.
