AUSTRALIAN Melanie Schlanger has missed out on a medal after finishing behind Dutch swimmer Ranomi Kromowidjojo in the women's 100 metre freestyle.

Schlanger did not have the best of starts, giving the leaders some breathing space before making them sweat as she came home strong.

However, Schlanger's time of 53.47 was not good enough to place within the medals, silver heading to Belarusian Aliaksandra Herasimenia and bronze to China's Yi Tang.

"Fourth hurts a little ... but I'm sure I'll get over it," Schlanger said.
