A Grade 5 student said the emotional incident went on for about an hour.

"The teachers said 'everyone get inside quickly' and we had to hide under the desk," she said.

"The teacher's locked the door and turned the lights off. Parents were called and kids were crying.

"We heard a big bang, we were told it was a student from the school who was really angry.

"It was really scary."

It's understood parents visiting the school were ushered into the canteen.

The school declined to comment, but a Department of Education spokesman said the lockdown was called as a "precaution".

"As a precaution, students were kept in between 1.35 and 2.20pm today while inappropriate behaviour by a student in the playground was resolved," the spokesman said.

"No students or staff were hurt, no damage was done and police were not needed."
