School: To go or not to go?

MORE than one in eight Warwick State High students hasn't been turning up to school this year.

Newly released State Government figures show the attendance rate at Southern Downs (state) schools sits at an average of 92%, just above the Queensland average of 91.5% per cent. The figures include both primary and high school aged students.

Warwick State High School recorded the lowest annual attendance rate in the region at 86.8%, with My School data showing that less than 60% of its students (Year 10 and below) attended 90% or more of the first semester.

The figures take into account all absences including students who are sick, on holidays or truanting.

Yangan State School had the best turn out rate in the region for 2016 at 94.9%.

Yangan State High School principal Joey Campbell said he was proud of the figure and attributed high attendance rates to the school and local community prioritising a supportive environment for its students.

"It comes down to the teachers and parents taking the children's education very seriously and ensuring they come to school," Mr Campbell said.

"I think if you asked the students, all 90 of them would tell you they really do love being here."

Across the state, schools with large numbers of indigenous pupils and students in remote rural areas had the lowest attendance, with rates dropping as low as 57.8% for the year.
