POLICE are appealing for public assistance after clothing was located on Main Beach, at Yamba on Sunday.
About 12.15pm on Sunday, a man was seen entering the surf. He was described by witnesses as in his 60s, around 170 to 173cms tall with short-grey hair.
At the time, the man was wearing dark-coloured board shorts and had a profound limp on his left leg.
Some hours later, the man's hat and maroon-coloured towel were still on the beach.
Police were called to the location and spoke with several witnesses and life guards.
No-one spoken to had seen the man return from the surf.
Police conducted a canvass of surrounding businesses and vehicles, but were unable to locate the man.
Marine Rescue and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter also conducted patrols of the surf but did not locate the man.
While no-one has been reported missing at this stage, police are appealing for the man or anyone with information about the man to contact Yamba Police Station on 02 6603 0199 or Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.
POLICE, Surf Life Saving Australia, Marine Rescue and the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helipcopter are conducting a general search at Main Beach, Yamba after reports a swimmer may have gone missing.
Police say details are sketchy at this stage, but it is possible a swimmer has gone into the water and hasn't come out.
