Second spot for Barbarians
THE Emerald Barbarians of AGOOD Health and Body Wade and Alena Bidgood say they have the Emerald heat to thank for their second place finish in Brisbane last month.
The husband and wife pair and teammates Sam Black, Jesse McMillan, Mason Luxford and Kelly Neilson pushed themselves to the tilt at the WODstock Crossfit Summer Series with one of their best results to date.
With their set workouts unknown until a week before the event, their lead-up training was tough and wide ranging. That training was necessary as the competition was brutal, but thankfully they had a secret weapon.
"I think the heat here in Emerald is why we went so well there," Alena said. "As we train during the day up here, it was hot (in Brisbane) but not unbearably hot like it is here (in Emerald)."
"We didn't expect second place but were stoked that we did." While Alena is the driver, Wade takes more of a backseat approach to things. He said their training had been immense in the months before their competition.
"We were doing two hours a day, so it's been hard," Wade detailed.
"She pushes us pretty hard, It's a lot of volume to start with, though as you keep going your body adapts to the work load and you get more conditioned to what you are doing.
"We did very well for a small team from Emerald coming up against the big Brisbane clubs.
"Throughout the comp you do four workouts of 15 minutes and the last one was the hardest by far.
"It was a 15 minutes sled-pull combo… you had to do burpie-broad jumps for 80 metres and then run back as a team and pull the 40kg sled back and forth for 80m and see how far you can get in 15 minutes. It's pretty awful."
